When Charlie Craggs Met 'Orange Is The New Black's' Laverne Cox
The Debrief: Laverne and Charlie talk trans awareness, turning anger into action and, of course, the new season of Orange Is The New Black
Let’s be real. Laverne Cox is an icon. She’s become a huge role model for women all over the world and it’s hard to imagine a world in which her Orange Is The New Black character, Sophia, isn’t a vital part of our periodic Netflix binges.
If you’ve been absent from life in the last week, you might’ve missed that season five of OITNB finally made its way to our laptop screens, so trans activist and founder of the brilliant Nail Transphobia campaign Charlie Craggs sat down with Laverne to talk all about the show and the really important themes that have come out of the new episodes.
We're all such huge fans of Orange Is The New Black and there's no doubt about how quickly we eagerly get sucked into the drama of Litchfield Penitentiary, but in the interview, Laverne and Charlie also talk about the huge impact that the show has had its audience and the power it has to bring really important cultural issues to light - such as police brutality and trans awareness - and spark conversations in a way that people who wouldn't otherwise empathise with can relate.
Listen to Laverne talk about turning anger into action and Charlie discuss how important Laverne and her character have been to her personally. And if you're not quite up to speed yet, here's our rundown of what to expect from season five of Orange Is The New Black.
