6 Foods That Can Help Calm Your Anxiety

5 Foods That Can Help Your Anxiety

The Debrief: Even more reason to love avocados

What food we put into our bodies has a massive input into how we feel on the inside, and outside. Not only for our skin and general wellbeing, but as Dr Uma Naidoo (an expert in food and psychology) has discovered, our mental health too. Her article, written for the Harvard Health Publication, highlights how certain foods can ease anxiety, and with 1 in 4 of us Brits suffering from mental health problems each year the idea that we can ease anxiety with food can only be a positive thing.

According to Dr Uma Naidoo’s research, only a third of people suffering from anxiety actually seek professional help, so she suggests maintaining a diet rich in whole greens, vegetables and fruits to sustain a healthy outlook.

1. Avocados and almonds

Anything rich in vitamin B should be high on your shopping list.

2. Pickles

Or other probotic foods like kefir according to this journal.

3. Salmon

Bascially eat all the fatty omega-2 salmon you can. Eat it all.

4. Oysters

Or if oysters are too expensive (or you find them rank) try cashews, beef and egg yolks.

5. Spinach

Leafy greens, swiss chard, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains  – basically anything rich in magnesium – are winners.

We’re not saying that changing your diet will automatically help your anxiety, but if you struggle with symptoms it might be one to try – after you’ve spoken to your doctor of course.
