There Are Going To Be FIVE Fantastic Beasts Films. Which Seems Like A Lot

The Debrief: JK Rowling is still a boss, basically

It’s been announced that Harry Potter fans will get five Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them films. Yes, we’re Sirius!

Everyone’s talking about the first film in the series, which is out on November 17, not only because it stars the ridiculously charming Eddie Redmayne, but because all our adulthoods will now be complete with talk of hippogriffs and hufflepuffs.

For the not-so-HP-obsessed of us, it’s worth knowing that this isn’t a Harry Potter prequel or sequel. It’s set decades before we even knew of Harry at Hogwarts, taking place in 1920s New York around a secret community of witches and wizards.

Why is it important? Because 70 years on, a little Harry Potter is described as reading Eddie Redmayne’s character Newt Scamander’s textbook. The famed Magizoologist, who’s obsessed with magical creatures (we would be too) pens Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them after being expelled from Hogwarts and joining the Ministry of Magic.

If that all sounds a bit complicated, then good, because, what we all thought was going to be a trilogy of movies is now going to run its course over five feature films.

Author JK Rowling broke the news on a live stream and the world is going a little bit apeshit over the news. The HP films made more than £5.7bn worldwide so there’s definitely an audience, and JK obviously likes playing screenwriter.

Steve Jobs’ Katherine Waterston plays an American witch (and Newt's love interest), and Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy fame, Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo and Colin Farrell also star. We can't tell you who's who exactly but expect a lot of muggle/wizard conflict K?

What we do know is that Dumbledore will be mentioned in this movie, Grindelwald will make an appearance and at some point Newt is going to be in another big capital city…

To put it bluntly, our life as we know it now is over because we’re soon going to revert to feeling like we’re back in year seven again.
