13 Free Ebooks To Read That Aren't Going Anywhere
The Debrief: Got no cash for your Kindle? Here's some books you can download for free
Want to read more but too short on cash to download e books to your Kindle? Did you know that there's actually loads of free books you can download online? Even better, there's a ton of classics, which means those books you always felt like you should read, are ready and waiting for you.
1. Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
One of the greatest books like, ever. Wuthering Heights is about star-crossed lovers Catherine and Heathcliff, battling for their love on the stormy Yorkshire Moors. Read with Kate Bush in the background. Windy weather optional.
2. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Ignore the Leonardo DiCaprio / Baz Lurhmann film and (if you haven't already) settle down with this glamourous story set in America in the 1920’s, full of lavish parties and plenty of scandal.
4. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Mr Darcy the Dreamboat, reporting for duty. Elizabeth Bennett is one of five sisters, with a mother hell-bent on them all marrying rich and successful men. Much better in print than on telly.
5. If there was Schizophrenia - Blake Steidler
A true biography of a schizophrenic, he takes you through 11 different psychotic episodes during his life.
6. Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
Poor old Pip. The little lad didn't have the easiest life. Set in England, the book follows Pip and his encounters with Miss Haversham (Gillian Anderson in that BBC adaptation, OMG) and Estella and how his life changes thanks to a series of unfortunate (and fortunate) events.
7. Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy
Anna Karenina leaves her husband when she falls head over heels for the wealthy officer Count Vronsky. Unsuprisingly, this being an epic Russian love story, their love affair quickly brings paranoia and jealousy that threatens to tear their lives apart.
8. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
Orphan Jane grows up to become a shy, quiet governess who becomes a tutor to a little French girl. She falls in love with the mysterious and attractive Mr Rochester, but what terrible secret could he possibly be hiding in the attic? (Hint: it's not good).
9. The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne
Hester Prynne is publicly ostracized and forced to wear a piece of fabric in the shape of the letter 'A' after having an illegitimate child. Read first then watch Emma Stone's Easy A, the modern high school update.
10. Alice In Wonderland - Lewis Carroll
Thankfully, there's no Johnny Depps to be seen in the book. It wasn't until much later he made his stamp on what's probably one of your favourite childrens' stories. It's worth a re-read now though, this story is beyond trippy.
11. War and Peace - Leon Tolstoy
You promised you'd read the book when the BBC series was over and, now it is and the book is free online, there's no excuse.
12. The Wizard Of Oz - Frank L. Baum
Another kids' book you'll be surprised to find was as loopy a drug trip.
13. Little Women - Louisa May Alcott
Follow the four March sisters as they come of age. Destiny has contrasting fortunes in store for all of them; looking at marriage, their careers, travel and own personal health. How will the bond of family keep them together?
