Should I Buy... The Acupressure Mat?

This is kind of a weird one. But stick with us.

People are obsessed with acupressure mats at the moment. For the uninitiated, these are, essentially, a mat with protruding plastic spikes which you lie down on and they make you feel better. Really.

 London Beauty Queen is a big fan of hers for relieving tension in her back.

As is Sarah Beth Yoga who also found it particularly helpful for tension relief.

What it's meant to do is mimick the old timey 'bed of nails' (like, with actualy nails) which was believed to have been used in ancient India for relaxation. How does lying on a bunch of spiky things help you relax you ask?  Very good question. According to Bed Of Nails Accupressure Mats explainer page (this is the mat I tried out), it 'triggers the body’s innate way of healing itself, it is an effective tool for easing tension and inducing a state of deep relaxation.' If you want to get sciencey, it triggers endorphins to fight the (mild) pain from the spikes and, as we know, endorphins help relax and energise your body.

This could (emphasis on could) lead to improved circulation, increased energy levels, reduced stress and anxiety, improved tension and muscle aches, improve chronic neck and back pain, even improve skin complexion and loads more.

So, does it work?

Hey, I'm not going to lie, I liked it. I liked it a lot. Sitting at a desk and going running most days means I'm covered in aches and pains. Tight back, sore neck, you name it. And the mat did provide me with temporary relief.

Lying down on it at first is a little uncomfortable. It's recommended you wear a thin t-shirt for your first time. I didn't do this because I'm a moron. And yeah, it kind of hurts, but then you kind of get used to it, and it's kind of nice. You do 10 to 15 minutes on your back, then the same on your front. Front deffos hurts more.

Take care shifting around and getting up and down too as spread out across your body the spikes are fine but catch one by itself and the little buggers can hurt.

Used over a week I have to say I didn't notice any long term effects but, in terms of tension relief and light back and neck pain easing, it was a master, and it was relief that lasted me for the rest of the day. Essentially, your body feels looser, which I guess does make you feel more relaxed mentally. It might be a placebo effect but hey, I'm rolling with it.
