This 3D-Printed Clitoris Might Be Introduced To The French Sex Ed Curriculum

The Debrief: The anatomically correct model... looks nothing like we were expecting, actually

This June, a French government body monitoring gender equality in public life published a report on sex education in France. It found that the curriculum is incredibly sexist, with the official guidelines currently state that girls  'attach more importance to love' than boys who are more focussed on 'genital sexuality.'

Prompted by feminism and clitoris activism in France, independent sociomedical researcher Odile Fillod has created an anatomically correct printable 3D clitoris which she hopes will be used for sex education in French schools from September, the Guardian reports.

Fillod believes that it’s important for women to have a visual idea of what happens in their body when they are stimulated, and to know that the physical equivalent of a penis is the clitoris rather than the vagina. She has also been working with V. Ideaux, creators of an anti-sexist web series, to create sex education videos. She hopes that doctors will also use her sculpture to teach the truth about the female body, and is optimistic about the future of female sexuality. She told The Guardian: 'Understanding that they have an erectile system just like men, I think women will start to experiment more. They will understand that pleasure is not some magic that only a partner knows how to give.'

Despite Fillod’s optimism that the 3D clitoris will be widely embraced, the 3D plans for the printable model will actually be open-source. This means that any teacher could print one and teach their students with it, but they can also choose not to – which is disappointing considering the findings of the French sex ed report! However, there is hope yet – a group of activists/teachers,  SVT Égalité, who offer tools for teachers wanting to eliminate sexism from their classes. They will be offering the 3D clitoris.

While it might be a way off from being mandatory, the existence of the 3D clitoris marks a great move towards teaching girls more about their bodies and how they can get pleasure from sex.
