Soon We'll Be Shopping On Facebook
The Debrief: Because Facebook never wants you to visit another website again
We didn’t think it was humanely possible for us to actually spend any more time on Facebook than we already do, but turns out, we soon will be. On its quest to become basically the one and only place we spend our digital lives, Facebook has evidently been having some pretty epic brainstorming sessions about how they can get us even more addicted and have settled on a pretty obvious solution: shopping!
Yup, Facebook has just announced that they’re testing out a new shopping section. What!? Read on for the lowdown.
What is it?
There will be a new shopping section, which will, apparently, act as a ‘single place for people to more easily discover, share, and purchase products.’ The Facebook app is also going to see some more shop-friendly changes, too.
How does it work?
There are two additions currently on test. The first, called Canvas, turns the typical scrolling FB ads into immersive ones where you can click on an ad that then turns into a full-screen page where you can select size, colour, etc and buy on the spot.
A ‘Buy’ button and a Shopping feed, which displays the merchandise of brands participating in the Shop section (Facebook introduced it last month), complete with search bar to make it super easy to find whatever it is you’re looking for, have also been added.
They’re also planning to usurp eBay and add products that people are selling to each other. This will basically look like our current Newsfeeds, but instead of smug post-run selfies and statuses announcing engagements and babies (yawn), this will be stuff you can buy!
The most useful/creepy aspect of this is that it will be highlighting products you’re most likely to be interested in, based on your connections, likes and interests.
Given how freaking much Facebook knows about us, this could well be the most accurate personal shopping interest feed available, making it absolutely terrifying news for our bank accounts.
When will we be using it?
At the moment, both features are still in testing and so are only visible to a small number of users. The new shopping features are expected to properly launch sometime around the new year.
