Chris Brown Covers Rihanna’s B**** Better Have My Money
The Debrief: How's about just sending her some flowers or something next time, Chris?
We all now know how the world feels about the ultra-violent video for Rihanna’s Bitch Better Have My Money. Some think it’s a powerful assertion of black female agency, others think it’s misogynistic unfair victimisation of white women over white men. Other people are just bored of what other people think about fictional music videos.
However, at least the general sentiment about the song – for those who actually ‘get’ trap music – is that it’s a woman asking for the money she’s owed and that’s a good thing. It’s even based on a real-life struggle Rihanna had after an accountant gave her dodgy advice which left her in financial difficulty, so y’know, video aside, she’s totally allowed to sing the whole ‘Bitch, give me your money’ line.
But now Chris Brown’s been covering the song on tour in Asia. And as much as the song’s got righteous indignation coming from Rihanna’s mouth, it kind of sounds like he’s just yelling it because it gives him an excuse to say ‘bitch’ a lot.
He also exclaimed ‘you know that’s my bitch for life’:
We get he’s still got a flame for Rihanna (even after a long-term relationship with Karrueche Tran and another dalliance which has seen him become a father) but if you’re going to sing a song to try to woo your very much moved on ex who you once beat up, maybe pick a sweeter one? Rihanna’s not exactly got a lot of ‘sweet’ in her back catalogue, but if you’re appealing to love, how about Umbrella? Or just something that doesn’t repeatedly, you know, make demands of a woman and call her a bitch?
