Adele Tells Us About The One Furry Side Effect Of Pregnancy We Never Knew About

The Debrief: ‘It’s actually true. I’m not telling a joke. I actually have a beard’

Most of us are pretty aware of the long list of symptoms and side effects that come with being pregnant. Weird cravings, morning sickness, pushing a tiny human out of your vagina; the whole shebang. But growing a beard? I bet not many of us knew about that one.

If you were lucky enough to make it to Adele’s sell-out gig in Glasgow last Friday though, you would have been treated to that little nugget of information as well.

At the performance Adele told the crowd: ’When I got pregnant I had so much testosterone in me that I grew a beard’. And it’s really not as uncommon as you might think.

The Mirror reported that actress Drew Barrymore grew a ‘wonderful little goatee’ when she was pregnant with her daughter. They explained that thanks to an increase in androgen levels (the male sex hormones that women also produce), pregnant women can experience ‘thickening and faster-growing hair’.

So what did Adele do when she found herself sporting some new facial hair? She named it, obvs.  The singer told the audience: ‘I only cropped it last night. It’s actually true. I’m not telling a joke. I actually have a beard, but I’m proud of it. I call it Larry.’ Fair bloody play, right?

Oh, and in case you were wondering how this came up in conversation in the middle of a world tour, Adele had been admiring her audience's beard game when she told them 'There are a lot of good beards here. My man's got a good beard. He trims it sometimes in the summer. It really annoys me - but I do have a beard myself so I can understand when it gets hot'. Which does make total sense.

Anyone else suddenly feel even more desperate to get to one of Adele's shows, just to be there in person for these mid-performance chats? She already told us that even she had a quarter life crisis and gets nervy poos just like we do, so this just another one of those real life reasons that Adele is bloody great. And Larry. Larry's cool too.
