A Chicago student has allegedly told police that his assault of a fellow student was a ‘re-enactment’ of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Mohammed Hossain, 19, had gone with a girl he had ‘previously been intimate with’, but wasn’t dating back to his dorm at the University of Illinois, Chicago, on Sunday, reports The Chicago Tribune. He asked the girl to remove her clothes – and she consented to this, removing everything apart from her underwear. He then bound her to the bed and gagged her. He then removed her underwear and started beating her with a belt. The woman then told Hossain he was hurting her, told him to stop and ‘began shaking her head and crying’ according to Sarah Karr, Assistant State’s Attorney.

However, he continued, this time beating her with his fists. She struggled free and tried to escape but he then caught her, put her hands behind her back and sexually assaulted her, despite her pleas for him to stop, Karr said.

After stopping his roommate from returning to his room, Hossain let the woman go. She reported what had happened to police and Hossain was later arrested. According to police, he admitted to ‘doing something wrong’ and said that he and the woman had been re-enacting scenes from Fifty Shades of Grey.

The premiere of Fifty Shades was protested by women’s groups, who told The Debrief that their problem with the film was its ‘model of consent’. The founder of Fifty Shades of Abuse said, ‘It’s a massive social phenomenon. Worldwide, Fifty Shades has almost become shorthand for good sex, or for romance, and neither of those things are helpful descriptions.’

Hossain has been charged with sexual assault and his bail is set at $500,000 (£322,862.89).
