The People’s Choice Awards is basically a popularity contest, and might as well be called the One Direction awards, if the boys ever turn up.
This might be why only one award was given to someone who might actually see success when the ‘real’ award season (Golden Globes, Emmys) rolls around – Viola Davis, for her role in How To Get Away With Murder. It’s not that the popular vote doesn’t count, it’s just that people vote for odd winners sometimes.
As for the rest of the awards? ‘Prize-winning qualifications seem to include being young, attractive and available to sit in the theater on a Wednesday night’, reported* Time*.
Anyway, there was one thing very touching about the show, even considering that The Voice was awarded ‘favourite competition TV show’, and happens to be produced by the same guy who produces… The People’s Choice Awards. Anyway Chloe Moretz, who probably won’t get an award elsewhere this season, was given a gong for If I Stay.
When Chloe collected her award she made a pretty sweet tribute to her grandma. After giving all the thanks, she said: ‘I would love to dedicate this award to my grandmother who passed away last year, because this movie is about life and family and love so this is for you.’ Then she called her grandma ‘mi-mom’ or something like that, which was pretty adorable.
What else happened at the awards, you ask? Ben Affleck got a ‘favourite humanitarian’ award for his work in the Congo, which apparently led to the crash of the Eastern Congo Initiative’s website. And there you have it, awards season 2015 is well underway.
