Kim Kardashian Reminds Us That Yes, Puberty Is Always Absolutely Awful

Whatever your body shape, personality type, height and general appearance, puberty was crap wasn't it?

Kim Kardashian has spoken out in Elle magazine about how upsetting puberty was for her – she used to lie in the bath and pray her boobs would stop growing – which reminds us all how absolutely shite that time of our lives were. Well, not for everyone, but for a hell of a lot of people. Whether you were skinny, fat, had massive boobs, no boobs, were one of the ‘popular’ girls, one of the ‘saddos’ or in my case ‘the one who looks like a man and also has a man’s name, you must be a man, are you a man? HAHAHAH MANGIRL’, chances are you cried a bit or felt angsty.

Kim certainly did, and she was, as many of us are, a bit terrified of the massive changes going on with her body. ‘When I was 13 my father [Robert Kardashian] wrote me a letter. I was unhappy with my body – I developed really early. Every night I would sit in the bath and cry, I prayed my boobs would stop growing. He told me I had a body not many girls have, that later it would lead to attention from men, but that the most important thing was that I was a wonderful girl and I had to understand my self worth.’

Whoa, OK, bit weird that your dad wrote you a letter about your boobs, and that he’s saying your worth will later be measured by the amount of guys ogling them, but the thought behind this is very sweet. If, ultimately, fruitless because you can’t help looking down and grimacing when you’re a teenager, regardless of how many letters Robert Kardashian writes you. Or your own dad.

‘I grew up when the body to have was the tall, slim, supermodel one, like Cindy Crawford’s. No one looked like me. It’s good to break the mould and recreate one,’ she told the mag, which is out now. ‘I’m an Armenian girl, I have shape, and it turned out people liked that. That makes me feel good about myself and about other women for being so supportive.’

For anyone with boobs, an arse, or any form of fat who grew up in the early ’00s, when Rachel Zoe ruled supreme and the most covetable look was tiny bird-like wrists supporting massive bangles and even more massive handbags, they’ll recognise themselves in this. But even my skinny friends felt bad, because they were too pale, or not small enough, or their hair didn't work or they had acne. Basically puberty sucked for everyone.

And it’s great that Kim is talking honestly about it, because she just went full-on nude on the front cover of a magazine. And regardless of what body type floats your boat, she looked amazing (despite the oil), which shows she’s accepted her curvy physique. Even though there are a solid core of celebs who aren’t size zero, the overwhelming majority still are, and we applaud Kim’s courage to stick to her guns and celebrate her beautiful, and different, body type. ‘I am a confident woman,’ she added. ‘But I didn’t just arrive confident – it has built over the years and that is a big part of who I am now.’

Let’s all aim for that, guys.
