FKA Twigs, real name Tahliah Barnett, was probably pretty happy with life before Robert Pattinson came along. Her album, LP1, was nominated for a Mercury Award and loads of people were playing her songs on the radio. And her music videos, creepy as they might be, were getting loads of hits. As far as alt popstardom was going, it was going well for her.
Then she met a guy called Rob and they hooked up and started dating. Or maybe they were old fashioned and dated first. Whatever. They’re going out, and as fun as that might be for them, Twigs has been on the receiving end of a lot of online hate. You see, Rob’s fans love him so much they either don’t want him to go out with anyone but them or Kristen Stewart, who totally cheated on him a couple of years ago.
Speaking for the first time about her relationship with Rob, Twigs told USA Today that she doesn’t really like attention being drawn to things about her that aren’t her actual work. ‘I really enjoy the fun of putting something out and people liking it or hating it or talking about it, but vacuous attention, it feels disgusting. It’s like a hangover,’ she said. ‘It’s weird, I know that’s not really because of me or what I’m doing.’
However, she added, ‘The positivity that I get from [my relationship] makes the more challenging aspects... very worth it.’
So that’s a positive, right?

And as for the trolls who’ve hated on her for being a) a woman going out with Rob; and b) a mixed race woman going out with Rob – she writes them off as ‘14-year-old kids that should be in bed’.
She also had another gripe, this time about the way she’s looked at. ‘Sometimes I look at someone like James Blake, and I kind of envy the fact that he’s a 6ft 2in English guy and no one will say he’s changed his T-shirt from black to blue. People will only talk about his music.’
But we’re not quite buying that. We’ve seen James Blake live, you could face backward and still enjoy it. Twigs, though? It’s not all about the visuals, but if she’s going to be so aesthetically spectacular through her work, dancing and directing videos, we’re probably going to talk about it. In a good way, obvs.
