You bought a pair of boyfriend jeans at the start of the summer and quickly realised that they're the perfectly insouciant go-with-everything trousers that you can't live without. So much so that you've worn them to every festival, gig, pub and house party you've been to ever since. But now winter is here, you're going to have to ditch all those printed T-shirts that they look so great with, and learn how to style them with actual warm things.

The best thing about boyfriend jeans is that you can wear them anywhere – with trainers and a luxe sweatshirt to hit the shops, or with heels and a metallic cami for a night out. Those straight, roomy legs can be trickier to style with bulky coats and knits than your standard skinnies, though, so here are three tips on how to wear your boyfriend jeans now that the weather is biting at your ankles.

Triple denim: mix your blues

Remember double denim circa 2009 and how fashion foward you felt tucking your chambray shirt into your boot-cut jeans? Well prepare yourself for the souped up version for this season – triple denim. Mix up your shades, wearing washed-out denim and true blue boyfriend jeans in the same look.

Get rockabilly

If you're worried your feet are going to freeze because your boyfriend jeans don't quite reach your shoes, then make the statement sock your new best friend. This razzle-dazzle pair work well with sandals (see, you don't have to ditch those at the end of summer, either) but will also look great peeking out from ankle boots.

Copy your actual boyfriend

Men have it easy when it comes to wardrobe choices, but sometimes we can learn from their simple genius. A pair of high-top trainers will sit at the perfect height beneath your boyfriend jeans, and if you can't afford to invest in your own sheepskin jacket, just steal his.
