Sheer Lace As Daywear? Now A Legit Thing

Forget the tights, say hello to big pants and sneakers

We’ve gotta say, we love this. Mainly because it totally defies that split season wardrobe diktat that insists you can only wear cashmere in winter and lace in summer.

Well sure, lace is brilliant in summer – more than brilliant; we pretty much rely on it for tops and dresses – but what’s to say it can’t be worn out of high summer? At the recent SS15 Copenhagen Fashion Week, bloggers Camille Charriere and Pernille Teisbaek both wore sheer lace maxi dresses with lace-up plimsolls (Acne and Superga respectively.)

Whilst Pernille opted for a sporty-meets-sexi vibe of big black pants and crop top underneath her Bruuns Bazaar lace tunic, Camille sweated her way through proceedings with a pre-released giant knit (knee length polo necks? Also going to be huge this autumn), offering just a sliver of sheer lace hem around the calf area.

As the nights get longer and darker, Camille’s knit over lace is the wisest way to go foward, although we’re also keen to cram in a bit of full-length lace and lace alone – a la Veronika Heilbrunner and blogger Danielle Bernstein – before we’re forced to chuck a knit over the top.

Try the lace dress in black – like supermodel Anja Rubik, who paired a totally sheer-legged maxi dress with sunglasses and simple Chloé scalloped flats – or white, like Veronika. Don’t opt for tights once the weather drops, though. Tights underneath a sheer skirt look crapulous. Instead, try some thick ribbed socks and trainers or biker boots and a chunky knit or belted wool coat.

Equally, keep the boho element in check – a fedora works well on Danielle, but in general adopting a clean, minimalist look like Anja and Veronika is infinitely easier to ape. Shop our favourite lace picks below and for any sleeveless camsiole style dresses, simply add a jersey polo neck or ribbed tee underneath. You can also try a maxi skirt with a plain tee. And if you’re super petite? Don’t despair, try a skater frock like Topshop’s Petite Lace Midi Dress, £58.
