She considers herself in a different league to today’s pop stars, but what can we learn about so many of today’s singers causing a stir with their twerks?

About 14 years ago, Kylie Minogue’s bum defined the bum. She debuted it in her comeback video for 2000’s Spinning Around, all gold hot-panted and swirling in the disco. Hers was the ass-pirational one, and Jennifer Lopez’s was the extraordinary bum. But now, with pop stars like Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea proudly showing their bums, there’s not really much notice paid to those bestowed with smaller posteriors.

Like, it wasn’t Miley’s bum that everyone got upset about at last year’s VMAs, it was what she was doing with it. This year, it wasn’t the twerking that upset people, but the very presence of so many female bums.

Anyway. All of this cultural focus is now on the bigger bums, something which Kylie commented on in a recent interview, saying: ‘I think those ladies like Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea have bootys and I don't even think of mine in the same zone.’

‘As fun as it is, I don't twerk,’ she told MailOnline, ‘I don't know what you call what I do... I shimmy. I prefer the slow movement, let's say.’

So, Kylie totally accepts that her derrière is no longer the trendiest, but what can this tell us? Well, Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, which is basically all about bums, features a bum-laden video, has a single cover with a photo of Nicki Minaj in a pink thong, showing off that glorious bum also heavily samples Sir Mix-A-Lot’s song Baby Got Back. The song, released way back in 1986 (14 years before Kylie’s Spinning Around) is a four-minute and twenty-two second ode to the bum, basically worshipping larger bums. And if you look at 28 years before that, in 1958, curvy bodies were so highly desirable that women would see adverts in papers and magazines encouraging them to put on weight.

That big bums have come around (round, get it?) into popularity in these 28 year cycles, just proves that no matter what your bum looks like right now, just sit tight and it’ll be popular at some point. Like, um, now. We mean, as much as celebrities’ bottoms might be adored or squabbled over, desire comes in all shapes and sizes, right?
