What does it take to nab a Maroon 5 frontman? Actually we don't really care that South African model Behati Prinsloo is soon to marry Adam Levine. We just care that she looks more than brilliant. And despite being a member of California's glossy possé (aka a Victoria's Secret Angel) her personal style is as natural and down to earth - or, as she has previously said, 'easy, a bit rock-and-roll and punk with a little tomboy...I have my hippie side as well' - as possible.

Which is why she's the subject of today's The Debrief Dissects:

Try things in unexpected colours

Sure, black DMs are a dime a dollar; and how many Made in Chelsea-ites have you seen in a black fedora? Behati's brilliance is in selecting maroon DMs (ha! Geddit?) with jaunty yellow laces and a burnt orange fedora. An oversized denim jacket balances the hippy and the grunge.

LOL at yourself - and what's cool

Is Behati wearing a Barbour? The first person since Alexa to make them look cool. She's also busily re-branding the backwards baseball cap. We hate the word effortless - but this is. Even the peculiar slogan tee works.

Dress down eveningwear with brogues

A black crop top and trousers always looks chic - especially on the super attenuated. What's genius is that she's added a pair of brogues. Looks so much cooler than a pair of courts.

When you need to doll up - doll the F up

This may not be her natural style, but she's gone for it, all kinds of Diane Kruger guns blazing. Kudos for not only a beautiful floral mini dress/ side plait and bright pink lip but for standing in front of a wall of pink flowers and therefore perfectly co-ordinating with her background. It can be hard to co-ordinate so thoroughly with your background, so the lesson to take from this one is don't be afraid to really doll up, even if it's not your normal vibe.

Stripey trousers plus Adidas patterned sneaks? Yes please

You can tell Behati's the kind of girl that doesn't agonise over her wardrobe choices and it's that sense of thrown togetherness that works so well. Some drop crotch striped trousers look super cute with ankle socks and patterned Adidas Superstars, whilst the ubiquotous fedora, round sunnies and choker lend her a soupcçon of British cool.

Just because you live in California...

... Doesn't mean Behati dresses like a beach bum. And thank god - because if we see one more crochet kimono... Behati's all-black look is much more NYLON, than LA. We're counting down the days until the winter when we can justify a Moschino belt, black shearling jacket and Chelsea boots.
